How to Troubleshoot Common Issues with Underwater Torque Wrench Systems

Subsea torque wrenches are critical weapons when it comes to installing/ maintaining subsea valves however, with any precision tool there are certain issues to be met along the way. We are experts in subsea solutions and offer expert advice to help your underwater torque tools to perform to their best. The following are the most common problems and solutions to maintaining a smooth running operation.

1. Inconsistent Torque Output

Symptoms: Changes in the applied torque, under or over tightening of bolts.

Possible Causes:

Restorative changes in hydraulic pressure

Damaged/worn torque sensor

Kept improper hydraulics fluid

Solutions:

Check stability of hydraulic system pressure

Calibration of the torque sensor should be done on regular bases

Change hydraulic fluid and look at possible leaks

2. Seal Failure or Water Ingress

Symptoms: The presence of moisture in the tool, the decrease of performance or corrosions.

Possible Causes:

Bad O-rings or seals

Excessive depth beyond rated specifications

Improper storage after use

Solutions:

Check and change seals prior to every deployment

Make sure that the tool is only used to the limit of its depth rating

After use rinse in fresh water and dry well

3. Hydraulic System Malfunctions

Symptoms: Sluggishness, power loss or failure.

Potential Causes: Hydraulic line air bubbles

Plugged filters or valves

Pump / motor problems

Solutions:

Hydraulic lines bleed air

Change or wash filters

Test hydraulic pump functioning

4. Bolt Slippage or Misalignment

Symptoms: Latching of fasteners or incorrect seating.

Possible Causes:

Worn or wrong socket adapter

Tool offsets collision

corroded bolt heads

Solutions:

Utilize correct size of the socket and inspect this socket wear

Before exerting torque make sure you are aligned well

Before installing bolts, examine bolts and check whether they are damaged or not.

5. Communication Errors (for ROV-Integrated Systems)

Symptoms: no reception of torque or control signals.

Possible Causes:

Bad electric connections

Problems of software compatibility

Deep water signal interference

Solutions:

Inspect all connections to see whether there is corrosion or other problems with the connectors

Update control software where necessary

To limit the interference use shielded cables.

6. Reduced Battery Life (for Electric Models)

Symptoms: Reduced time of work between charges.

Possible Causes:

Worn-out batteries cells

Extreme frigid weather

Load requirements High

Solutions:

Change batteries according to the maintenance plan

It is better to run batteries in warm areas Pre-warm batteries in cold areas

Use the cycles to save power

Tips on Preventive Maintenance

In order to reduce the downtime:

Carry out pre check-up of all parts before diving

Use recommended service intervals by a manufacturer
