How an Underwater Ultrasonic Sensor Detects Objects in Low Visibility Environments

The ability to navigate and track within the poor visibility conditions underwater is extremely difficult in the marine activities. The superior underwater ultrasonic sensors eliminate the environmental process affecting the admitted waters because it has excellent object detection capability even on totally turbid waters where optical systems cannot be used. Such advanced sensors use sound waves of a higher frequency to form an image of the underwater as minutely or vividly as possible with or without any light or clarity with regards to water.

Our principle of working with the ultrasonic sensors is sending exact sound pulses that will travel through the water and bounce back on objects. The system gives superb accuracy of distance and location of sunken objects by measuring the delay between the time the pulse is sent and the time the echo returns. This technology comes in especially beneficial in places with sediments or algae blooms or pollution reducing visibility in the harbor as close to zero.

We have a special adaptive frequency modulation in our sensors that adjust themselves accordingly to varying water conditions. They have higher frequencies to give good resolution to small objects in shallow environments with much sediment. At deeper water uses, the lower frequencies deliver higher detection distances without impairing the successful performance of the same. The system uses efficient signal processing algorithms to eliminate background noise due to waves, marine wildlife, and other facts, providing clean usable data.

Underwater applications can range as ROV avoidance of obstacles, structural inspection of underwater infrastructure and port security. The sensors have the capability of monitoring all gaps including cases of lost containers, nets and even illegal divers who may want to go near restricted areas. When combined with underwater surveillance systems it forms a complete surveillance arrangement that integrates all of the ultrasonic sensors with visual verification when the water is clear.

The ultrasonic sensors of Seaward Tech are designed to survive in harsh marine conditions with corrosion-resistant materials and stainless housing being pressure-rated housings ready to work in deep-water. They incorporate low maintenance demand and easy adaptation to any underwater platforms to offer a cost-effective solution to maintenance programs of improving safety and effective operations of the objects in low-visibility. Marine operators with a requirement to have reliable under water detection capabilities have found the reliability of our ultrasonic sensor based solutions to be a proven product that works when optical systems fail.
